    But that integration involves IT security, data governance, and network compatibility—areas where a sleep specialist has no business claiming expertise.

The vendor who says 'We do everything—sleep, respiratory, monitoring, digital health' should immediately trigger a follow-up question: What do you actually specialize in?

I'll take the specialist who, when asked about molecular diagnostics (a completely different field of lab-based testing), says: 'That's outside our scope. Let me refer you to our partner lab.' That specialist earns my business for life.

Anticipating the Objection: 'Aren't You Just Limiting Your Own Market?'

A common pushback I get from colleagues: 'If you tell a patient you can't handle their MRI compatibility question, won't they think you're incompetent?'

My experience says the opposite.

I tracked this over six months in 2024. Patients who received a 'I don't know, but I'll find out or refer you' response had a 92% return rate for follow-up appointments. Those who received a confident-sounding but vague answer? 71%. The trust differential is real.

The risk calculation:
