Standard masks with adapter: Virtually unlimited. Any mask with a standard 22mm connector works with the AirMini adapter kit (ResMed part #37299). So you can offer your patients that niche full-face mask they swear by, or the pediatric-sized nasal mask that's impossible to find in AirMini specific.

Initial misjudgment: I assumed the dedicated masks were the only option. What I mean is, I spent months only ordering AirMini-specific stock before realizing the adapter existed. Embarrassing, but a lesson learned.

Dimension 2: Cost Comparison (TCO Thinking)

Let's talk numbers. Here's what I've seen across vendor quotes (exact figures vary, but the pattern holds):

Dedicated AirMini masks:
- Mask + headgear: $80-120 (wholesale)

The adapter route can be cheaper upfront, but only if you're already stocking standard masks. The hidden cost? Inventory complexity. You're now managing two SKUs per mask: standard and adapted. That adds picking time, confusion, and—I've seen this happen—staff giving patients the wrong parts.

Post-decision doubt: Even after choosing the adapter route for our main inventory, I kept second-guessing. What if patients lost the adapter? The two months until we standardized our process were stressful.

Dimension 3: Patient Experience

This is where things get interesting, and the dedicated masks have a clear edge. Here's why:

Dedicated AirMini masks: They're designed for the device. The connector is low-profile, the tube is lightweight, and the whole setup is compact. Travel-friendly. No extra parts to lose.

Standard mask + adapter: The adapter adds bulk at the connection point. Patients complain about the "bump" near their face. The standard tube is thicker and heavier. And—surprise—the adapter can disconnect during sleep. Not ideal.

Our respiratory therapist reported that a patient using the adapter setup woke up to find the mask disconnected three times in one night. That's a compliance killer.

What About Filters?

Oh, and about filters—the AirMini uses a specific filter, not standard CPAP filters. The ResMed AirMini filter is a small, circular disc that sits in the air intake. Standard CPAP filters won't fit.

  • You already have a large standard mask inventory you want to leverage
  • Cost per unit is your primary driver

Hybrid approach (what we settled on):
We stock 3 dedicated AirMini mask options (nasal, nasal pillow, full face) for new setups. We keep 5 adapter kits on hand for existing patients who want to use their current mask with AirMini. This covers 95% of scenarios without overcomplicating the inventory.

Save the adapter for the outlier cases. It's not ideal, but workable.

Final Thought

Look, there's no perfect answer. Compatibility hinges on your patient volume, your inventory strategy, and what your clinicians recommend. But here's what I wish someone had told me when I started: Don't assume all masks work with AirMini. Check the connector. Verify the filter type. And if you're buying in bulk, make sure you're getting the right parts.

The $50 you save on a cheaper mask isn't worth the $500 in frustration when it doesn't work.
